The shrimping industry has long played an important role in the culture of Cajun Country. So much so that the town of Delcambre throws a five-day celebration of the shrimping industry and all things shrimp each year. Delcambre, located in both Iberia and Vermilion parishes, has served as an important hub for the shrimping industry for many years. What originally began as a way to raise funds for the Delcambre Fire Department has evolved into one of Louisiana’s biggest festivals. The Delcambre Shrimp Festival, in its 69th year, pays homage to its past with a celebration of all things shrimp.
The five-day event kicks off Wednesday, August 14, boasting a number of exciting activities such as a shrimp cook-off featuring tasty recipes, live music, seafood royalty and a boat parade. There’s even a spot to enjoy the festival via boat! The Delcambre Shrimp Festival Queen and King Crustacean are set to reign over the festival.
The party continues all weekend long with stellar musical performances from acts like KrossFyre, Ole Whiskey Revival, Mike Dean, Chris Ardoin, Ryan Foret and national recording artist Craig Morgan, in addition to a daily fais-do-do, or dance party. The phrase translates into “go to sleep” which is what Cajun parents would tell their little ones before heading off to a party.
In addition to rockin’ music, you’ll want to grab a tray with some fresh-boiled Louisiana shrimp, find a spot to sit and peel away. On the festival’s final day on Sunday, August 18, the festival holds the annual Fisherman’s Mass followed by the traditional Blessing of the Fleet, in which the community asks for the protection of the shrimpers and for an abundant season.
No visit to Louisiana is complete without sampling some fresh, local shrimp. So grab your shrimpin’ boots and your appetite and head to Cajun Country! Snap, tag and share your adventures with #OnlyLouisiana and @LouisianaTravel.
