Black coffee and red crawfish, endless bayous, dark-water swamps and piney woods, food festivals
and foot-tapping fais-do-do’s, friendly and gloriously riotous people who embrace their culture
proudly call Louisiana home, these people welcome retirees to their way of life. In Louisiana, you
don’t just see the sights and taste the food, you become a part of them. It is this inclusiveness that
is attractive to retirees. The retirees feel 100% part of the Louisiana community as soon as they
become a resident.
The thirteen communities in Louisiana that have been certified and ready to welcome and embrace
retirees include: Breaux Bridge, Houma and Terrebonne Parish, Kaplan, Lafayette Parish,
Lake Charles, Natchitoches, Ruston and Lincoln Parish, St. Mary Parish, Shreveport-Bossier
City, Tangipahoa Parish, Toledo Bend and Sabine Parish, Thibodaux and West Monroe.
All thirteen of these Louisiana areas in the Louisiana Certified Retirement Program have a uniqueness
in each of their areas that is attractive to retirees. These certified retirement areas work in conjunction
with the state of Louisiana to let prospective retirees know Louisiana is not only a great place to
visit, but also a great place to retire. Some of the criteria to become a certified area include a mild
climate, favorable tax structure, plenty of housing, excellent health care, public safety, employment
and volunteer opportunities, access to public transportation and lots of festivals and recreational
opportunities.
Louisiana residents are excellent at creating their own fun – whether in the outdoors utilizing the
natural resources, creating their own organizations to celebrate culture and heritage, or simply a
desire to collectively have fun by gathering around the boiling pot. The good news is, each of these
communities has a spot around the pot waiting just for you.
