Grand Avoille Cove Paddling Trail (Atchafalaya Basin)
Lake Fausse Pointe and Grand Avoille Cove lie adjacent to the Atchafalaya Basin swamp, the largest overflow swamp in the United States. The Atchafalaya River runs through the basin, which extends north from Morgan City past Lafayette in a maze of bayous, lakes, ponds and cypress swamps. The area is a great place for birding, as the cove is lined with cypress trees, and canoeists can paddle close to the trees. In some areas, high winds can cause choppiness in the water, and coastal tides can affect currents, so pay attention to the conditions. Follow the tree line for safety. To get to the Jeanerette Canal Landing, from Highway 90, take Jeanerette Exit/Highway 668, which turns into Highway 671 (also Canal Street); take a left onto Main Street (Highway 182); at the first traffic light, turn right onto Highway 671; cross Bayou Teche and turn left onto Highway 87; after about a quarter-mile, the road will curve to the right and then fork; keep going straight onto Jeanerette Canal Road. The boat landing is at the end of Jeanerette Canal Road (about 2.2 miles). For more information see Cajun Coast Visitor & Convention Bureau at http://www.cajuncoast.com or call 800-256-2931.
