The Grand Avoille Cove Trail is an ideal path for novice-to-intermediate paddlers. It offers a variety of waterways to explore with the opportunity to extend or shorten your trip as you go with lots of additional areas to roam and two exit options.

The narrow Jeanerette Canal is an easy, scenic paddle to Lake Fausse Pointe. From there, you can roam the lake or follow the shoreline east to the Atchafalaya Basin Spillway Levee. Nature enthusiasts will love canoeing or kayaking near the moss-draped cypress trees along the shore and spotting the many of the bird species that call the lake home.

Once you begin your way along the levee, you’ll have the choice of stopping to explore the Grand Avoille Cove area and boat launch, or continuing along the levee until the final destination — the Chitimacha boat launch in the charming, countryside community of Charenton.

No matter which end point you choose, Charenton offers plenty of delicious, post-paddle eats. Choose from cheesy quesadillas, juicy Cajun burgers and fried seafood po’boys at Nita’s Place, or get fresh-boiled seafood to go at Fluke’s Seafood Shack. While you’re in town, stop by the Chitimacha Museum for exhibits on Chitimacha tribe lifestyles, customs and ceremonies.
