Explore Lake D’Arbonne State Park’s piney forests, rolling hills and indigo-dark lake. It’s truly a pick-your-own adventure experience: You can paddle, fish, hike, geocache or lie on the beach. Most notably, it’s nature focused, with towering pines and majestic wildlife around every bend.

The northwesternmost part of the park offers hidden geocaches. Head southeast to find an infamous mixing hole known for fishing and teal ducks. If you’d rather catch some rays, visit the marina for lunch and swim at the beach.

For those interested in watching unique species of birds, visit the Lake D’Arbonne Refuge. Bald eagles and migratory birds find sanctuary in no-hunting portions of the refuge.

The northcentral part of the park offers crescent-moon-shaped mounds used for Native American ceremonies. When the water is low, arrowheads and pottery appear along the islands, where visitors can view the treasures with reverence. If you’re visiting between mid-April and October, paddle to a waterfront church service from Easter through the first week in October.

Enhance your stay at the park with a camping trip. Be sure to rent kayaks or canoes, play a match at the tennis courts, dip in the swimming pool and stroll the walking trails. After a nature-filled trip, visit downtown Monroe’s Antique Alley for a little retail therapy.
