This trail offers up to 10 miles of paddling if you begin at the Calumet Cut. From there you’ll glide through Patterson to the mouth of the Bayou Teche at the Atchafalaya River. Calumet is the site of the Battle of Bisland during the Civil War. The gunboat “Cotton” was sunk in Bayou Teche during the battle. As you paddle along you will pass private homes and miles of vegetation. You may want to make a stop in Patterson, once home to two young aviation pioneers, Harry Williams and Jimmie Wedell. The Louisiana State Museum in Patterson features an interesting aviation exhibit. You may want to stop at the Cajun Coast Visitors & Convention Bureau, also in Patterson, for a picnic lunch. Camping is available at the Two Sisters Boat Launch in Bayou Vista. The Jesse B. Hayes, Jr. Memorial Boat Launch is located on Hayes Lane off Highway 182 in Patterson. From Highway 90, turn onto Red Cypress Road in Patterson; turn left onto Highway 182 W,; travel 1.5 miles; the landing will be on your right. For more information see Cajun Coast Visitor & Convention Bureau or call 800-256-2931.
