The area in and around St. Martinville was originally the home of the Attakapas Indians, where they lived, hunted and fished. The Europeans, along with the Africans, began arriving in mid 1700s. Incorporated in 1817. Tour the Evangeline Oak Park on the Bayou Teche: Cultural Heritage Center - African American, Acadian Memorial Museums, Tourism Center, St. Martin De Tours Church Square and Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site.
