Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area

The terrain in this almost 6,000-acre wildlife management area consists of rugged hills, bluffs and ravines. The area – northwest of St. Francisville – lies at the southern end of the Loess Blufflands escarpment that follows the east bank of the Mississippi River from its confluence with the Ohio River. These lands offer a diverse habitat that supports some species of plants and animals not found elsewhere in Louisiana. Three separate trails, each an out-and-back of about two miles in length (four miles total, each) branch off the main gravel road. Thick stands of upland hardwoods and steep hills create a very dense environment in parts of the area. Banks 40 feet high in some place can make you feel that you’re biking through a tunnel. Listen for the calls of exotic-sounding birds echoing through the silence. This area is open to a variety of outdoor recreational activities including hunting, trapping, bird watching, hiking and horseback riding.
