As the nation’s largest urban wildlife refuge, Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge boasts nearly 36 square-miles of gorgeous southern marshes to paddle — all within the city of New Orleans.

Explore open freshwater and inlets to reedy marshes with brackish water. This habitat variety provides sanctuary to many animals throughout the year, but especially in May, when an enormous wading bird rookery can be found. In winter, expect to see waterfowl, who take refuge within the bountiful marshes.

Paddle to one of the refuge’s many boardwalks to observe the wildlife who take sanctuary there. You’re bound to meet other birders, fisherman, photographers and paddlers.

Extend your paddling adventure at the Irish Bayou Castle, a popular place to explore. Spend the night at Fontainebleau State Park or check out the exhibits and nature programs at Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.

New Orleans provides infinite adventures, but be sure to check out one of the city’s fascinating museums like The National World War II Museum. For dinner, sample local eats at restaurants like Antoine’s or La Crepe Nanou.
