Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge
Located at the edge of Grand Lake, this freshwater refuge is a wildlife enthusiast’s dream. Watch for wading and water birds such as ibis, roseate spoonbills and egrets, along with alligators, nutria and raccoons. You may also spot endangered species like bald eagles, peregrine falcons and Louisiana black bears. Once you’re done paddling, make time to hike through the lush and expansive refuge.
While you’re in Lake Charles, make note of nearby Sam Houston Jones State Park, which is also great for paddling. Hike at sunrise for spectacular Southwest Louisiana views, then head to the campsite for morning coffee and breakfast.
