Amelia

Amelia is located at the easternmost edge of St. Mary Parish, surrounded by a maze of canals, bayous, rivers and lakes. These waterways area all part of the larger Atchafalaya Basin, the largest river swamp in the nation.

Amelia was named for Amelia Dupuis, a woman who, some time in the 1850s, was engaged to be married to local postmaster Joseph Dellucky. Amelia died just days before the wedding, and Dellucky successfully petitioned to have the village named in her honor.

Besides the endless adventures that outdoorsmen and families alike can find in the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, Amelia is known for its Amelia Belle Casino. This riverboat gaming destination on Avoca Island Cutoff offers nonstop casino fun, with more than 800 slots and 11 table games.
