Viva Lake Charles! Upon taking the casino trolley from L’Auberge Casino Resort to the new Golden Nugget Lake Charles, I thought I had found myself in Las Vegas. The energy was high, the ambiance was contemporary and the retail outlets were cosmopolitan. The best part was how genuinely kind and attentive the employees were.
The casino floor was packed and the high limit area was quite impressive. The bars and night clubs around the property had relaxing lounge seating that was ultra-modern.
I had heard rave reviews about the chocolate dipping station in the 400-seat buffet, so I had to see it for myself. There was homemade gelato, a cotton candy machine and coconut macarons. The options for any type of cuisine seemed endless.
I met with executive chef Brett Baldwin at Landry’s Seafood House and sampled a few of his favorite menu items. Chef Baldwin, a 24-year-old native of Eunice, hired all Louisiana cooks, and I could tell. The jambalaya was as good as my sister’s, and that says a lot. The Bananas Foster bread pudding was the best bread pudding I’ve ever put in my mouth.
With 740 guest rooms and suites, meeting space, extensive retail outlets, a full-service spa and the casino floor, the Golden Nugget Lake Charles has truly added to the appeal of southwest Louisiana as a premier resort destination.
Food enthusiasts will be delighted to know there are nine restaurants to choose from. Just a few of the examples are fine dining at Vic & Anthony’s, legendary Gulf seafood from Landry’s Seafood House and casual options at Claim Jumper. Grotto boasts authentic Italian cuisine, while Saltgrass Steak House offers a wide selection from Angus beef steaks to seafood. Enjoy hand crafted cocktails and an impressive list of tequila selections paired with Mexican cuisine at Cadillac Mexican Kitchen & Tequila Bar.
There’s a lazy river with a water slide, along with a marina and private beach, all opening this summer. Golden Nugget has already booked top name entertainers for the first quarter like LeAnn Rimes, Merle Haggard and Alabama. Golfers shouldn’t miss the 18-hole championship golf course, the Country Club at the Golden Nugget, which is set to open at the end of April.
Although Golden Nugget Lake Charles is the fifth Golden Nugget property, it is really the flagship since this $700 million resort is the first resort Landry’s Inc. CEO and sole owner Tilman J. Feritta built from the ground up.
