Mississippi Levee-Top Trail/Audubon Zoo to Rivertown
Note: This route is currently closed about two miles into the trail, so bikers may need to choose an alternate route.
This paved levee top trail gives you an opportunity to bike, jog or skate without worrying about traffic. However, you do need to watch for cars and trucks crossing the trail at various places along the route. You begin at the Audubon Zoo, so you may want to build a zoo visit into your schedule first. The initial six miles of the trail run through a commercial area.
Once you reach the Colonial Country Club, you'll be treated to grand views of the Mississippi River and its boat traffic. The six miles from the Country Club to Rivertown will take you between the Mississippi River on your left and nice front yards on your right. When you arrive at Rivertown, you'll find a pier that juts out above the river, along with benches, if you need a rest. Rivertown, located in Kenner, is a haven for family fun. A restored three-block area has museums and nearby restaurants.
Start: Audubon Zoo in Uptown New Orleans. Go to the Zoo entrance and park. Go toward the Riverview Drive Cruise Dock through the blue iron gate. Immediately after the railroad tracks, go right on the Levee Trail. The trail runs alongside the railroad track for about a mile. It then climbs up to the levee top and stays there until you reach Rivertown (12 miles)
NOTE: To reach the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, from the levee and Williams Boulevard in Rivertown, take Williams Boulevard to Hwy. 61 (Airline Hwy.); left on Hwy. 61. There is a shoulder on Hwy. 61. At the Airport Road, follow signs to departure gates.
