West Baton Rouge Parish
West Baton Rouge Parish is, geographically, one of Louisiana’s smallest parishes. But as New Orleans (its even more diminutive sister to the south proves) sometimes good things come in small packages. Just across the Mississippi River is the booming metropolis of Baton Rouge. But West Baton Rouge Parish is a tranquil place with riverfront views of this bustling life. One of the plantation houses in the area is Poplar Grove. Originally part of a pavilion at the 1884 World’s Fair in New Orleans, the ornate building was moved upriver to be used as the residence of a sugar plantation. The centrality of sugar in the history of West Baton Rouge is recognized with the popular Sugarfest, where the sweet tooth finds satisfaction. Being in the heart of Plantation Country, and with its proximity to the old and the new, West Baton Rouge offers a superb base camp for exploring Louisiana.
