Chances are you've seen Natchitoches even if you've never heard of it. The award winning 1989 film Steel Magnolias was set and filmed here, and in 2002 Oprah Winfrey proclaimed Natchitoches "the best little town in the whole U.S.A.!"
Established in 1714 as the first French colony in Louisiana, Natchitoches has retained a distinct European flavor that is evident in its architecture, its heritage and its relaxed lifestyle. The city's National Historic Landmark District is centered around Front Street, a brick thoroughfare where lacey wrought iron balconies frame the restaurants and shops face picturesque Cane River Lake. The Historic District is a popular destination for shopping, dining, and attractions plus historic fort sites, museums, and year-round cultural events and festivals.
Natchitoches is known as the Bed & Breakfast Capital of Louisiana and is home to the historic Oakland and Magnolia Plantations. Named one of the 2005's Dozen Distinctive Destinations for Historic Preservation by the National Trust, the town includes many historic homes, churches and commercial buildings. For the real thing, try Lasyone's Meat Pie Kitchen & Restaurant on Second Street.
