Louisiana's state parks and historic sites offer a variety of events year-round for families, nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Cure spring fever with a trip to a Louisiana state park or historic site! Special events and programs are scheduled throughout the season. Here's a look at a few of the highlights:
Palmetto Island State Park, Abbeville: Join along for the monthly guided canoe trip down the park's canoe trail and learn about local plant and animal life. Space is limited so reserve a spot in advance. For dates and information, call 337.893.7047.
Rebel State Historic Site, Marthaville: The site's Musical Petting Zoo at the Country Music Museum lets you indulge your inner country music star. Pick up and play the collection of stringed instruments on display and you may just discover a hidden talent. Available daily Tuesday through Saturday. For information, call 888.677.3600.
Louisiana State Arboretum, Ville Platte: On May 12, the Arboretum hosts the International Migratory Bird Day Festival. Learn about birds and conservation efforts through a trail hike, presentation, games and displays. To learn more, call 888.677.6100.
Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site, St. Francisville: Today's quarrels may no longer be settled with a duel, but the concept is no less interesting. Enjoy a presentation of the rules and a demonstration of different types of duels throughout history during the Duel at High Noon, 12 p.m. on May 5. For information, call 888.376.1867.
Fairview-Riverside State Park, Madisonville: You've heard of May Day, but do you really know about the day's traditions? As you tour the park's Otis House Museum, learn about the Victorian custom of creating tussie mussies (individual bouquets) and floral baskets to leave at neighbors' homes on May Day. Hodges Gardens State Park, Florien: There's perhaps no better place to experience the beauty of spring in Louisiana than Hodges Gardens State Park. The Friends of Hodges Gardens will be offering garden tours at 10 a.m. April 17 through April 28.
Grand Isle State Park, Grand Isle: Get up close and personal with Mother Nature during a beachfront campout on this beautiful barrier island. Campsites are available for just $12 a night. While you're there, enjoying swimming, birding and fishing. For reservations, call 877.226.7652.
