Coined as the “longest Main Street in the world,” the beautiful Bayou Lafourche stretches more than 100 miles. No matter what section you paddle, you’ll experience history. From the Washa and Chitimacha Native American tribes to Canadian settlers, many people have paddled these waters.

Given Bayou Lafourche’s great length, it’s important to note that your trip is highly customizable by entry and exit point. Take a leisurely paddle or plan a truly adventurous trip, like the annual multi-day, 52-mile trip arranged by the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program. Regardless of what your adventure may be, the Port Fourchon Coastal Wetlands Park, an immersive recreational and educational area, waits at the end of the bayou.

When you’re ready to return to land, discover Louisiana’s history at the Jean Lafitte Acadian Cultural Center in Thibodaux. The museum's interactive exhibits bring to life Acadian migration — the foundation of the state’s distinctive culture. You may even get to sit in on a Cajun-music jam session.
