Louisiana is home to the most unique and spectacular of all celebrations and festivals in North America. Each year, New Orleans stages a Mardi Gras celebration that has earned the reputation as the greatest free party on Earth.

Mardi Gras falls on February 21st this upcoming year, but Carnival-related events and parades start weeks before throughout the state. Traditionally, the 12th night after Christmas marks the beginning of the Carnival season. By that time, Carnival parade organizations – known as "krewes" – are deep into preparations for their annual parades, costume balls and parties. Be sure to learn the right lingo to use during your visit!

About two weeks before Fat Tuesday (that's the English translation of Mardi Gras), the parading begins in earnest (the official 2012 schedule will be released soon). In 2011, close to 60 krewes rolled out parades in various parts of the city during the weekends leading up to Mardi Gras, and 2012 should bring the same non-stop action! Fat Tuesday itself typically features back-to-back processions by some of the largest and oldest Carnival organizations in the state.

In between and during the parades, you’ll find yourself in the company of thousands of costumed revelers, including families who use the occasion as an opportunity to gather together to share food, music and that special Louisiana brand of fun. They call it FAT Tuesday for a reason, so make sure you experience the best of Louisiana dining while waiting to catch a glimpse of the King of Carnival.

While you're in New Orleans, stop by Arnaud's restaurant in the French Quarter, where you can not only enjoy a fine meal but also take a free stroll through the Germaine Cazenave Wells Mardi Gras Museum on the second floor. A definite “to-do” is a tour of Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World to get a peek at what it takes to throw a Carnival!

Hotels fill up fast, so reserve early. Check LouisianaTravel.com/hotels-motels for ideas on where to stay! Remember, new hotels are opening all of the time throughout Louisiana, so you’re sure to find a room close to the Carnival.

If you’ve been to New Orleans already and you want to try Carnival a different way, be sure to consider the great family-oriented Carnival parades, events and accommodations in many other parts of the state, from the Northshore Area to Cajun Country, to central and north Louisiana. A must-stop in southwestern Louisiana is the Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu. In north Louisiana, you'll want to plan a stop at the Ark-La-Tex Mardi Gras Museum in Bossier City.

Every corner of our great state is brimming with things to do! Check our Festivals page for lots of ideas for joining in the celebration.
