Property Description

In 1854, Dr. H.C. Thweatt and William E. Doty visited DeSoto Parish and saw the need for an institution of higher learning for young women. The Mansfield Female College opened the next year offering classes in art, foreign language and science. The curriculum was rigorous, but students also enjoyed sports and theater. During the Civil War, the college was to serve as a hospital for soldiers wounded in the Battle of Mansfield. The college continued to educate students until it closed in 1930.
