E.A. McIlhenny created a 170 acre gardens, in 1935 he opened it to the public to enjoy his collection of camellias, azaleas and other imported plants. You may see wildlife such as alligators, racoons, bobcats, deer and other wildlife as you walk or drive along man made lagoons that trail Bayou Petit Anse. The over 900 yr. old Buddha sits in the Temple he created. And visit "Bird City", home to thousands of egrets, herons, and other birds. Jungle Gardens is open every day of the year!
Directions
Avery Island via Lafayette, Take Lafayette/US Hwy 90 exit (exit 103) from I-10. Follow Hwy 90 through Lafayette to New Iberia. At LA 14, exit and turn left. At LA 329 junction, turn right. Stay on LA 329 approx. 7 miles to you reach Avery Island. Avery Island via New Orleans, Leave New Orleans on I-10 West. After airport exit, get in the right lane and take the I-310 South exit marked Boutte. Stay on I-310 South until you are forced to exit. Take Hwy 90 West exit, marked Houma. Stay on Hwy 90 West all the way to New Iberia. As you approach New Iberia, take the Avery Island exit, (Hwy 329). At the stop sign take a left onto Hwy 329(Avery Island Rd.) You will go under the Hwy 90 over pass. Stay on Avery Island Rd. Approximately 6 miles until you dead end at the Avery Island tollgate.
