African American Heritage Trail

Louisiana enjoys an internationally significant African American heritage - contributors to this rich and complex culture include musicians, cooks, craftsmen, inventors, and authors who have shaped not only the physical space in which we live today, but the spiritual one as well. The African American story in Louisiana, then, is really a story of hope in time of despair and of joy in a time of oppression. More than anything, though, it is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit.
The African American Heritage Trail is simply a reflection of these contributions to the state and nation. As such, sites along the trail relate the story of African American life in Louisiana from the earliest days of the 18th century through the Civil Rights struggle of the 1950s and 1960s, recounting the history of religious and educational institutions, economic opportunities, and political and social activities.
