Holiday open house – tour Louisiana homes, gardens
History and holidays mix well throughout Louisiana, where you are invited to tour many beautiful, stately homes that date back a century or more.
Holiday home tours held across the state during December offer great opportunities to see these structures up close at a time when they are decked out in festive finery.
Grand tours are readily available in many parts of Louisiana. In Lake Charles, visit the famous Charpentier District, a 40-block section filled with gorgeous Victorian homes that always put on their best in December. Or take in the Holiday Tour of Homes offered by the Lake Charles Symphony. You'll also enoy the Holiday House of the Brimstone Historical Society in nearby Sulphur, and Taste of the Holiday and Tour of Homes in historic DeQuincy (337-274-3572).
In the Shreveport-Bossier area, you shouldn't miss the stunning Christmas in Roseland display, at the unique Gardens of the American Rose Center, as well as home tours and other events associated with the Holiday Trail of Lights.
Historic Natchitoches also participates in the Holiday Trail of Lights, and is the setting for one of the grandest holiday festivals in the state, the Christmas Festival of Lights, which includes scheduled tours of a dozen beautiful homes.
Naturally, the December holidays are a perfect time to "stargaze" at the gorgeous mansions and historic homes of New Orleans. The annual tour of the Preservation Resource Center offers a look at eight stunning Garden District homes. Or, choose a French Quarter Holiday Home Tour presented by Patio Planters of the Vieux Carré. You could top off your day with a magical evening of candlelit caroling in historic Jackson Square.
