The Alexandre Mouton House is a lovely house museum located in the heart of downtown Lafayette. Original structure built in early 1800s by the found of Vermilionville, Jean Mouton. Later became home to Louisiana's 12th governor, Alexandre Mouton. About 1867, a group of properous Claiborne Parish farmers helped lead Claiborne Parish into the Industrial Revolution by building a cotton factory a few miles east of Homer at Arizona, LA. The three-story building made cotton thread and Osnaburg cloth. Inadequate transportation and a lack of skilled workers were the prime factors in its decline. It was in operation from 1867-1875. The chimney is located on private property but it is visible from state Hwy. 806. It is well worth your time to view, photograph, and listen to the history of this old structure. The tall, airy house where John James Audubon stayed is a splendid example of colonial architecture adapted to its climate. Built circa 1806, Oakley predates the relatively heavy details of classic revival in Southern plantation homes and claims distinction for its beautiful simplicity. The rooms of Oakley have been restored in the style of the late Federal Period (1790-1830), reflecting their appearance when Audubon stayed there.

The main feature of this 100-acre woodland site is Oakley House, where John James Audubon lived for a short time. Other facilities include formal and kitchen gardens, a separate kitchen and weaving room, a plantation barn, two slave cabins, a picnic area with a shelter and a nature trail through the acres of magnolia and poplar trees. Special living and history events, programs and demonstrations take place throughout the year.
