Festival of frogs goes on, Rayne or shine
A quintessential Louisiana event, the Rayne Frog Festival is held in November in, of course, Rayne.
Rain or shine, the fun will proceed in Rayne, Louisiana, as the 2010 Rayne Frog Festival opens under a 20,000-square-foot pavilion.
Festival attendees will find plenty of free parking on the Frog festival grounds, and spaces for RV campers as well (call Robert “Foot” Senegal, City of Rayne at 337-334-6661, for details).
You will love the frog racing and jumping contests – one of the most popular festival events – offering a chance to handle the hoppers and cheer them on in competition. A contestant may bring a frog or rent one for a small fee from the Rayne Jaycees!
Some 60 booths will tantalize you with food, arts and crafts, including paintings, ceramics, afghans, quilts, novelties and unique gifts. Kids will enjoy the exciting rides offered by Miller Spectacular Shows, and all will enjoy the live music by local area bands.
Always a crowd pleaser, the Rayne Lions Club Frog Derby features a “best dressed frog” competition in which each jockey dresses a frog in a unique, handmade costume. The beautiful jockeys also dress in pastel-colored shorts with suspenders, coordinating checkered blouses and matching caps to jump their frogs in competition. Concluding the colorful event is the crowning of the Frog Derby queen. It’s too much fun to miss – so don't!
