St. Augustine Church (Natchez)

Voices from the Trail

with story teller Louis Gossett, Jr.

Built by Nicholas Augustin Metoyer, St. Augustine is the first Catholic Church in the United States to be founded, independently financed, and built by African Americans for their express use. The structure is over two centuries old and still in active use. Though many have tried to purchase the famous portrait of Nicholas Augustin Metoyer, members of the community pooled their funds and bought the portrait to ensure it remained in the church. The annual fall church fair is a major community event. Map it
