De Soto Parish
Sharing a border with Texas has influenced the history of DeSoto Parish and left a rich legacy for visitors to explore. An effort by Union forces to halt supplies from Texas led to the last major Confederate victory of the Civil War here, which is commemorated at the Mansfield Historical Site with a museum, walking trails and reenactments. Along the Sabine River, Logansport is the location of the last known international boundary marker between the U.S. and the Republic of Texas, and is also the resting place of Alamo survivor Moses Rose. Keachi is home to three historic churches dating to the 19th century, and the Rock Chapel near Carmel, built in 1891 by local monks, still draws visitors seeking quiet sanctuary. A different type of sanctuary in Freirson called Yogie and Friends nurtures exotic cats, including lions and tigers, and is open to the public on a seasonal basis.
