Northshore Sampler

Sophisticated cuisine crafted by chefs showcasing local ingredients.

St. Tammany Parish, aka Louisiana’s Northshore, is rich in family-run restaurants where soulful food reflects tradition, heritage and hearty appetites. But you’ll also find sophisticated, even innovative, cuisine crafted by chefs showcasing the best local and seasonal ingredients on menus inspired by Louisiana’s bounty.

Eating is elegant at Dakota in Covington and at Lacombe’s La Provence, operated by celebrity chef John Besh, acclaimed cookbook author, frequent guest on The Food Network and star of his own PBS show. The lovely La Provence pairs traditional French techniques and Louisiana culinary sensibilities in a warm, country inn setting.

Try Louie and the Redhead Lady in Mandeville or LA Pines in Slidell, both featured on TFN’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.” Louie and the Redhead serves up southern classics like grits and grillades and fried green tomatoes. Liz’s Where Y’at Diner serves up a delicious debris benedict and crabtini with a side of impeccable Southern hospitality. Looking for a great meal and a great view? Try Rip’s on the Lake in Mandeville, overlooking Lake Pontchartrain. Or, check out The Chimes, a casual dining experience overlooking the Bogue Falaya River. In Slidell, Palmettos and Nathan’s both overlook scenic Bayou Bonfouca.

Our good food starts with Northshore farms, many of which also supply the chefs of nearby New Orleans. It continues with candy makers, bakers and brewers, beekeepers and seafood shops. Sample liquid Louisiana at the Abita Brew Pub in Abita Springs or Pontchartrain Vineyards in Bush.
