The town of Jean Lafitte is only 30 minutes from New Orleans, yet it offers a completely different scene. This 200-year-old fishing village is named after the infamous pirate and War of 1812 hero who once inhabited southeast Louisiana’s swamplands. You can visit those same swamps by taking a guided airboat or swamp tour, or by taking a hike in the vast Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and Preserve, located on the north edge of town. To learn about the region’s history and ecology, step inside Lafitte’s Barataria Museum and Wetlands Trace. This multimedia exhibition, with a theater, artifacts, animatronic displays and a nature trail, is a sure way to get families excited about the distinct beauty of Jean Lafitte.

After a day of fishing or exploring the wilderness, explore town and eat some  of Louisiana’s incredibly fresh seafood.
