Empire

Empire is located close to where the Mississippi River meets the Gulf of Mexico. It's one of the last fishing villages along Highway 23, which runs from the New Orleans suburbs to the southernmost point in Louisiana, the charter boat fishing mecca of Venice.

The origins of Empire's name aren't clear. It may have come from the Empire Canal that was built in the area around 1885. Or it may have come from Plaquemine Parish's nickname, the "Empire Parish," due to the wealth generated by sugar plantations there in the 1800s.

Empire is known for its charter boat fishing operations. Delta Marina, which also has cabins for rent, plus a boat launch, picnic area and bait store, is the home base for nearly a dozen outfitters.
