In 1714 when Natchitoches was founded this body of water was the Red River. The river changed courses around 1835 and the channel became a 33 mile long oxbow lake. The Cane River Lake in downtown historic Natchitoches is the heart of the city. Festivals and events are held on the downtown riverbank. Front Street lines the river front with shops, restaurants and attractions. Bring your fishing pole for some great fishing from the riverbank.
