Caddo Parish
Ever since Capt. Henry Miller Shreve cleared a logjam on the Red River in the 1830s, Caddo Parish and its largest city, Shreveport, have served as gateways to the West, a heritage that still informs local culture. The vibrant country music legacy, built during the days of the Louisiana Hayride radio broadcasts, comes to life today at concert halls and festival stages. Shreveport features world-class cultural institutions, casinos and large annual events, such as Mardi Gras parades early in the year, the Red River Revel Arts Festival and the State Fair of Louisiana in October. A short drive from Shreveport, Greenwood is home to the Gardens of the American Rose Center, a showcase for America's national flower. Small-town charm is proudly on display in communities like Vivan, home to the Louisiana Redbud Festival each March, and Gilliam, where flower arrangements are showcased for the Sunflower Trail and Festival in June.
